Cataclean is a fuel system cleaner for diesel, petrol and hybrid engines. Original Cataclean Original is designed to reduce carbon emissions, improve fuel efficiency and vehicle performance. It was renamed Cataclean Liquid Science in 2014. It is mainly aimed at the used car market. The catalytic converters of such vehicles can require cleaning because of a build up of deposits in a catalytic converter which reduces engine power and efficiency. This leads to problems including warning lights coming on, fuel consumption declining, the engine being sluggish, excessive smoke/odour coming from the exhaust, and increased carbon emissions. The UK Ministry of Transport MOT test requires that all vehicles pass an emissions test.〔https://www.gov.uk/emissions-testing〕 An estimated one million vehicles a year fail their MOT because of high emissions. Cleaning products such as Cataclean Original can be poured into the fuel tank and contain compounds that break down and remove deposits in the catalytic converter and other parts of the fuel systems such as the valves and injectors. DPFs sometimes experience problems when used on short, stop-start journeys in urban areas causing vehicles to enter limp mode.
